Cancel new nuclear testing in Nevada
Editors, Asheville Global Report,
Recently it has come to my attention that the Department of Energy plans to explode a 700-ton test bomb, June 2, 2006, on the Shoshone Native American Reservation in western Nevada. The citizens of Nevada and the Shoshone tribe are vehemently opposing this testing, but so far to no avail. The purpose of this test is to determine the size of bomb that would be dropped on Iran if we were to go to war with them, and it is called "Divine Strake." You can Google it by the same name to find out more information.
Now, I know this seems like it is so far away from our neck of the woods, but, when you consider all the implications involved, it is extremely close to everyone in our country and well beyond. The soil in Nevada is so saturated with radioactivity from all the nuclear test bombings in years past that when disturbed by this testing, that radioactivity will circulate the entire globe over. And as most of you know the wind and air currents usually flow from west to east, so the Appalachian Mountains will be right in its path.
Why would our government want to spew radioactivity over the entire globe? It is irresponsible and sends a terrible message to the world. Our reputation is already tarnished in many countries, and this sends a message that we don't care about other countries that may even be our allies. Also, we are trying to tell other countries not to use nuclear weapons and Sam Nunn and Joe Lieberman are working very hard to promote non-proliferation of nuclear arms. This action would just erase all the hard work that has been accomplished so far.
I called the Department of Energy to register a complaint and protest this experiment. I was told if I want to oppose this test, I would have to appeal to my senators and representative in Washington as they give the okay and hold the purse strings. I am asking that everyone who is concerned about this to fax, call, or email your senators and representatives to demand that they oppose this ridiculous and silly notion that a test bomb should be detonated anywhere at any time. Possibly with enough opposition from enough people this test will be canceled. Act now! June 2 is just around the corner.
