CBS: Israel behind January airstrike on Sudan arms convoy
CBS News reports that US officials blame Israel's Air Force for a January attack that destroyed a 17-truck convoy in Sudan, killing 39 people.
The attack apparently remained a secret for two months, until it surfaced on a Sudanese website last week. The Sudanese government then accused the US of carrying out the strike, but according to CBS, American officials told their correspondent that the attacki was carried out by Israel, who suspected the convoy was carrying Iranian weapons supplies bound for Gaza.
In January, the U.S. signed an agreement with Israel that called for an international effort to stop arms smuggling into Gaza in the aftermath of Israel's invasion of Gaza. More than 900 Palestinian civilians were reportedly killed in the month-long offensive.
The agreement included sharing of intelligence and technology to prevent weapons smuggling by land or sea, according to sources.
The first report from a Sudanese official stated that "A major power bombed small trucks carrying arms–burning all of them. It killed Sudanese, Eritreans, and Ethiopians and injured others." According to the Sudan Tribune the attack was an "embarrassment" to Sudan's government, who then discussed the matter with Egypt' in order to "gather more information to formulate a response."
Israel has refused to comment on the story.
