LA city council votes to boycott Arizona

The Los Angeles City Council voted Wednesday to boycott the state of Arizona because of its new immigration law. The law makes it a crime for illegal immigrants to be in the state and requires police to check immigration papers during investigation of a crime. Critics contend the law will lead to racial profiling. The City Council's resolution would bar the city from conducting business with the state of Arizona. The boycott requires approval from Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa -- who has already said he supports it. The boycott would involve suspending travel to the state, avoiding new contracts and reviewing current contracts for possible termination. The city has about $52 million in investments with Arizona, including contracts for airport, harbor and trucking services.
