Sex harassment underreported at military academies
The Pentagon believes only about 10 percent of sexual assaults are being reported at the nation's military academies, and officials say they want to create a greater comfort level for victims to come forward.
The Defense Department released annual reports from the Naval Academy, West Point and the Air Force Academy on Wednesday about efforts to reduce sexual misconduct.
There were 34 reports of sexual assault at the three academies in the last academic year. But a Defense Department survey indicates that represents only about 10 percent of the actual numbers of sexual assault or unwanted sexual contact, based on anonymous surveys with students.
Nathan Galbreath, who is the deputy director of the department's sexual assault prevention and response office, says the military wants to see an increase in reporting. That way, more people can get the care they need, and culprits can be held responsible.
