Atco Gas turns to geothermal heat

Atco Gas makes money selling natural gas, so when the firm decided to use heat from the earth to cut its heating and cooling bill, there were some doubters. "I have at times been a skeptic, I must say," Nancy Southern, Atco Group president and chief executive, said Friday. But no longer. The firm opened its $21.2-million North Edmonton Operations Centre on Friday at 13450 149th St. The 55,000-square-foot facility is the largest commercial building of its kind in Canada to use geothermal heating, ventilating and cooling technology with a boost from natural gas. The move will cut energy use by 40 per cent and reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 60 tonnes a year.
