China will cut emissions of so-called greenhouse gases per unit of gross domestic product by up to 45 per cent over the next decade, officials have announced. In a statement on Thursday, China's state council said the drive to improve efficiency was a "voluntary action" which would make "a major contribution to the global effort in tackling climate change". The announcement marks the first time China has set specific targets for cutting carbon emissions, seen as a major cause of global warming.
