Conservatives: George Osborne to cut public sector pay, pensions and bureaucracy

George Osborne, the shadow chancellor of Britain, has unveiled a dramatic series of cuts on public sector pay, pensions and bureaucracy in an attempt to tackle Britain's increasing levels of public debt. Osborne pledged to freeze all public sector pay for a year from 2011 if the Conservatives win the forthcoming general election. The move will affect teachers, doctors, nurses and police officers. Under Osborne's plans, only the one million earning less than £18,000 would get a rise, with military personnel on active service overseas being compensated by doubling their operational allowance to £4,800. The Tory proposal goes beyond Chancellor Alistair Darling's call for a salary freeze for the 750,000 highest-paid public servants.
