More than 500 activists clashed with police on Saturday (April 3) when they tried to break into a Belgium military base where they believe twenty U.S. nuclear weapons are illegally stored. The Bombspotting protest in Belgium was organized by the group Vredesactie, and was part of a series of anti-nuclear weapon actions throughout Europe. Organizers say they wanted to have a 'European day of action against nuclear weapons' and similar protests are taking place in Great Britain, France, Germany, Holland and Turkey. The protesters said it is time for nuclear disarmament. ''We came here because of nuclear weapons, because we think they aren't useful anymore and we don't understand why they're still here. We are protesting against it ,'' Detlef Packo, an activist, said. The protest comes one month before a conference is set to take place in New York to review the Non-Proliferation Treaty.
