At least 20 security force personnel were killed in an attack by Maoist militants on a police camp in the eastern Indian state of West Bengal Monday, media reports said. The strike in the state's West Midnapore district was the biggest attack by Maoist guerrillas in India this year. A group of 100 armed Maoists, many of them riding motorcycles, opened indiscriminate fire on federal paramilitary force troopers at their camp in the Sheeldah area, the NDTV network reported. 'We have received information that 20 federal force troopers were killed in the attack,' district official NS Nigam told the IANS news agency. He could not comment on the number of wounded. The Maoists, who are against parliamentary democracy and are fighting to establish a communist state, are active in 20 of India's 28 states and seven union territories, according to government officials.
