Thousands of people gathered at rallies in Gaza on Sunday to mark the anniversary of Operation Cast Lead, an Israeli offensive against Islamist militants that killed more than 1,000 people. A day earlier, three suspected militants were shot by Israeli troops in the West Bank town of Nablus. Israel said the three were responsible for the murder of an Israeli settler in the first such killing in eight months. Palestinian sources said two were members of the al-Aqsa Martyrs Brigades, a militant faction of Fatah, the party of the Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas. Three young men were also killed in the Gaza Strip as they approached a border crossing. Salam Fayyad, the Palestinian prime minister, condemned the raid in Nablus. "This attack was a clear assassination, and I believe it is targeting our security and stability," he said.
