US forces kill Afghan security guards

.S.-led coalition forces killed two Afghan security guards and six others in a raid in the eastern border province of Nangarhar, officials said Friday. The U.S. military launched an overnight operation in the Spin Ghar district of Nangarhar following reports of plans of militant attacks meant to coincide with presidential and provincial elections. Ahmad Zia Abdulzai, a provincial spokesman, said U.S. combat forces killed a border patrol officer along with a member of his family. An Afghan serviceman was among those killed by U.S. forces as well, the Pajhwok Afghan News agency reports. District officials tell the news agency U.S. forces killed three family members and arrested several others during the overnight raid. NATO officials, however, said three militants were killed in the operation. International forces attacked a police checkpoint last week in the southern province of Ghazni as well. U.S. military forces have been under pressure to curb civilian casualties.
